Thursday, March 19, 2009

Present: Joanne Russell, Debi Robinson, Mark Grebner, Kristi White, Amelia Opubor, Marcia Van Ness, Jim Bebermeyer, Jim DeWitt,  Kathy Jacobs, Liz Schweitzer, Brendan Boyle.
Guests: Fred Kletke; Gordon Schafer.

Absent: Kate Benington, Jeff Friedle, Bill Hartwig, Josh Smith.

I. Agenda:  Approved.

II. Introductions: Gordon Schafer is a volunteer from University Lutheran Church asked by the MSU Children's Health Initiative (MSU College of Human Medicine's Dept. of Pediatrics and Human Development) to seek out families in our area who would make use of a clinic for "children with serious, chronic or life threatening illness".
Volunteers are making contact with the Red Cedar School as well as the Islamic School in our area. Our area is high on the list of target areas. The survey seeks more information on first-hand experiences of families who have children with chronic illness and have used local medical facilities and are in financial need. Gordon can be contacted at: gnschafer@aol.com.

III. Approval of Minutes:  February minutes are unanimously approved with the correction to list Fred Kletke as a visitor.

IV. Treasurer's Report:  Kathy Jacobs reports that there has been no change since last month.

V. Old Business:

1. Marathon Station - Kathy reports she contacted Marathon and they intend to re-open the station in April. There were some city hurdles/approvals they had to deal with prior to being able to open again.

2. RCCA Annual Meeting - The date is Thursday, April 23. Our start time is 7:00 p.m. and Joanne suggests we invite someone from Public Works to speak for the first half hour on the South Harrison road project scheduled for next year. This will involve the road surface as well as water pipes. Liz will contact the city for a speaker on this.
Joanne, Kristi and Kathy will work on dessert/coffee for that night, and w will schedule to begin at 7:00 p.m.in the multi-purpose room at the Red Cedar School.
Kathy notes that she has sent a letter to the city requesting that bike paths be included in the S. Harrison Road project - from Mt. Hope to Michigan Avenue.
Seven board members have terms expiring this spring: Brendan Boyle (would like to run again); Jeff Friedle, Mark Grebner (would also like to run again); Kathy Jacobs (would consider a one-year term); Joanne Russell (would consider a one year term); and Marcia Van Ness.
There are five 3 year terms and two one year terms that will be open. Joanne will prepare the ballot.
We will have no monthly April RCCA board meeting since we have our annual meeting scheduled for April 23.

VI. Committee Reports:

1. CRC - Marcia reports that they are coming up on their 10th Anniversary soon and will celebrate with a community breakfast and a variety of fun events as well as spring clean-ups
Marcia also asks for discussion about the suggested revisions to the city's ordinance that adds new language with more specific warnings and increases the ability to prosecute for behaviors associated with violations to the "riot code". There are questions, discussion but no formal action by the Board. The hearing before City Council is this coming Tuesday.
2. Trowbridge - Liz, Brendan, Jim report that there have been no meetings. Ron Springer sent an email about two presentation sessions by a class at MSU that will take place on Monday, March 30 and Wed. April 29 in Room 106 of the Human Ecology building on north campus. Jim will verify the times but at least one is scheduled from 9 am to noon. Brendan will see if it can be videotaped for those who cannot attend during the day.

VII. New Business:
Joanne reports on the monthly meetings that the mayor has with neighborhood presidents. She will call the city to see what can be done about the 20 deer roaming our yards.
Deb will contact Dave Smiih in EL Public Works about the Consumer Energy tree-trimming that is scheduled to Begin soon. We are concerned about the trimming to the Emerson park evergreens along Arbor that could be seriously damaged by too much trimming.
Kathy has planted flowers in the past on the median near Lilac (thank you, Kathy!) but this year will do grass seed.
Jim B. expresses his appreciation for the kind letter that Joanne sent to him on behalf of the Board.
We thank Deb for use of the Arbor Forest Clubhouse and agree to move our monthly meetings to this new location instead of Shop-Rite starting with our May meeting. Joanne will thank Shop-Rite and let them know of the change.

VIII. Adjournment
