RCCA Board of Directors Meeting
Thursday, September 11, 2008

 

Present:  Jim Bebermeyer, Kate Benington, Kathy Jacobs, Debi Robinson,
Joanne Russell, Liz Schweitzer, Marcia Van Ness, Kristi White

 

Also:  Erin Carter, MSU/East Lansing Community Liaison; Megan O’Brien, Community Relations Coalition Intern; Fred Kletke

 

Absent:  Brendan Boyle, Jim Dewitt, Jeff Friedle, Mark Grebner, Bill Hartwig,
Amelia Opubor, Josh Smith

 

I.     Agenda approved.

 

II.    Introductions.

 

III.   June minutes approved.

 

IV. Treasurer’s Report (Kathy Jacobs):  $1,277.88 current balance.

 

V.   Old Business:
                1. Hicks Ronk donation: Research continues on design/cost of sign to recognize Flower Pot or Red Cedar

                neighborhood and Hicks family farm. Jim Bebermeyer mentioned the city’s  “over the street sign”

designations for neighborhoods. Joanne Russell will check on city policies.
 
 2.  FEMA: No report.

 

 3.  State Police site: Rumor that plans may be in the hands of the MSU Board of Trustees or MSU Campus Planning and Administration. Liz will check with MSU planning officials.

 

                4.  Red Cedar School: The board voted unanimously to donate $100 to the school’s 60th anniversary capital

                campaign.  A birthday celebration is planned for October.
  
VI. Committee Reports:
                1.  Community Relations Coalition (CRC):  CRC reps thanked the association for its cooperation with the

                successful Sept. 10 block party/ice cream social on Marigold Avenue. Suggestions for the future include

                attracting more student renters and trying different locations. 


 2.  Permit Parking: Balloting continues until Sept 19.?
 
  3.  Trowbridge comprehensive plan: No notice posted for fall meeting, Liz Schweitzer
reported.

  
VII:  New Business:
                 1. Korea House: Liquor license on city council agenda for Oct. 7.
 
                2. Candidates Night: Defer to League of Women Voters or others planning similar?

 

3.  Neighborhood Brochure: Kathy Jacobs offered to e-mail copies of an earlier marketing
brochure for reference. New one would help direct house hunters to Red Cedar. Jim Bebermeyer, Debi Robinson and Joanne Russell offered to check other brochures and contact former board members for input.

 

4.  Appearance of  neighborhood: Some neighbors met with a small board group to discuss
trees, old cars, unoccupied houses, rental inspections, etc.   City has been notified about trees.  Joanne Russell will contact PACE (Parking and Code Enforcement).   Community Liaison Erin Carter and CRC Intern Megan O’Brien offered to check reports of noise issues in the Hicks area.

 

5.  MDOT: In response to recent accidents, Liz Schweitzer will draft a letter urging reduction of the speed limit to 55 mph along a stretch of I-496 and U.S. 127 near Red Cedar neighborhood.
 
  6.  Mobil station: May reopen, board members hear.

 

VIII.   Board Concerns:
                1. Theft alert: Debi Robinson reported the recent theft of three catalytic converters from cars parked at

                Arbor Forest Apartments.

 

                 2. University Village: As an informational item, Marcia Van Ness clarified accountability in the University

 Village apartment complex. MSU managers, directors and student staff  handle activities within buildings.

The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety is the contact point for grounds and parking lot.
